Have you ever walked through your home after the stagers leave and thought, “Why didn’t we live like this before?”
We hear it all the time.
Some of our clients have told us that once the clutter is gone, they have no plans to put all of their things back in the new house.
It turns out there’s a name for that feeling.
It’s called house hushing.
Turn down the volume
House hushing comes from designer Myquillyn Smith, known as The Nester.
The idea is simple: everything in a room has a voice. Knick-knacks, photos, stacks of mail, one more throw pillow. On their own, they’re quiet. Together, they’re noise.
To hush a room, you move all the small items into another room for 24 hours, live with the quiet, and bring back only what you miss.
Smith calls it backwards decluttering, and it caught on so fast she wrote a whole book about it.
Staging is house hushing on a deadline
When we stage a home for sale, we’re doing the same thing.
We ask you to pack up the collections, personal photos and extra furniture so buyers can mentally move in.
The difference is who it’s for. Staging hushes your home for the buyer.
Most sellers are surprised at how calm the house feels while they’re living in it. Rooms look bigger, counters stay clear, and you finally notice the fireplace or the view instead of the stuff.
It’s the background hum most of us stopped hearing years ago.
Let your things earn their way back
Here’s the good news for your next home.
The boxes you packed for staging are already your holding room.
Before you unpack in the new house, ask yourself what deserves to earn its way back into your home.
If you lived happily for two months without it, you may not need it at all.
Keep what tells your story
House hushing isn’t about living in an empty house.
Once you’re in your new home, it’s your turn to be personal again. Bring back the family photos, the art you love and the pieces that mean something.
Just be selective. A few favorite things with room to breathe feel calmer, and more like you, than a hundred things competing for attention.
Moving is the perfect time to hush your house. You’re already touching every item you own, so why not decide what comes with you on purpose?
If you’re getting ready to sell, preparing your home for staging gives you a head start.
And once you’re settled, we’d be happy to help you create a calm, centered home with a redesign consultation, using the things you love most.
Let us shine a spotlight on your home!
